To be more fussbudgety, I fancy myself to be a "technical journalist," which is slightly different from being a "technology writer." A technology writer covers the cultural or business effects of technology, while a technical journalist covers the technical issues themselves. (I've always assumed a "technical writer" writes manuals and other forms of non-periodic documentation--which is not my bag.)
I've also done more than my share of pop culture stories as well. Pop culture, like technology, thrives on innovation and momentum.
