Notes: I've loved CSS'
2005 self-titled album for the past decade, for all its
hip sassiness,
DIY dance-ability and consistent
excellence. Maybe it was NYC nostalgia,
but this was the week I spun the other discs from this occasional São Paulo concern, hoping for other choice pop-dance jams.
The follow-up album "Donkey" went all upscale art pop, and while it worked well enough, I think it put
many, including myself, off-track.
Giving it another spin, I became the largest fan in the world this week for "Jager Yoga," according to Last.Fm, and the site might as well put me there for "City Grrl" (from "La Liberación"), an uncanny cover of Duran Duran's "Rio," a brilliant lost 2013 single "I've Seen You Drunk Gurl," and the next-gen 2023 collab with Karen Jonz "Coocoocrazy" which I hope heralds a much-overdue comeback for these guys.
Oh! And, lest we forget their punk roots, CSS tears through a demo of "One Way or Another / Teenage Kicks" (Blondie / Undertones) in under three minutes.
